How did you get that job?
Name Ruth Wilkinson Job Title Repetiteur
Company Scottish Opera (at the moment, anyway – I’m freelance).
When did you start your job? I trained as a repetiteur about fi fteen years ago now and have been doing it ever since. So what does your job actually involve? I’m a pianist who specialises in working with opera singers – coaching them in their roles, playing the orchestra parts during rehearsals, and sometimes performing with them as an accompanist. Just now I’m travelling all over Scotland with Scottish Opera’s Opera Highlights tour: four singers, with me on piano, taking a programme of arias and ensembles from lots of different operas to venues, and audiences, a bit removed from the big city theatres. We don’t have a conductor on this tour so I’m designated musical director; it’s been my job to make sure we agree on how we want to perform and that everything goes smoothly, musically speaking.
Best / Worst Aspects? I get to work with seriously talented musicians on some of the most beautiful and emotionally powerful music ever written; and I love being part of the rehearsal process, seeing how a performance grows from being the notes on the page to the whole theatrical experience. For a tour like this one, there’s the added bonus of the chance to visit places I maybe wouldn’t go to otherwise, and to perform for very welcoming, enthusiastic audiences. That said, there’s no denying that working so intensely can be utterly exhausting – and I miss my family when I’m touring. Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Ruth at the start of her career? Take every chance you get to hear good live music, and practise hard!
and fi nally . . .
Tell us more about what is currently going on with Scottish Opera? Well, the Opera Highlights tour lasts until 20 March; and the main house is rehearsing two very different shows this spring, to be performed in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness. There’s Puccini’s La Bohème, a revival of a production which I loved last time the company did it, and an opera by Janᡠek, The Adventures of Mr. Brouˇ ek, which I don’t know at all. I’m not involved in rehearsals so I’ll just be going along as an ordinary punter and discovering it along with everybody else. I’m looking forward to that. c
