REVIEW PRINTMAKING MAGNE F: ALPHA BETA Edinburgh Printmakers, until Sat 6 Mar ●●●●●
While many people will remember Magne Furuholmen as the keyboardist in 1980s Norwegian band A-ha, few will realise that he has had a concurrent career as an artist, having first exhibited in 1989. This dual vocation has been a large part of his life, and now he brings his latest series of works to Edinburgh, in association with the Paul Stoper Gallery, London.
While the alphabet (and associated Norwegian symbols) may not seem the liveliest of subjects, closer inspection yields some interesting insights into his process. Using monotype and drypoint etching to create his limited edition prints, Furuholmen works up layers of ink, image and text,
deconstructing each character and allowing the viewer to invest it with new meaning. The result is a quirky fusion of lyrical ramblings and unstructured prose that creates something more compelling than simple character etching. The important link between music and words comes
through in Furuholmen’s work, and several of the pieces have poetic works or single lines dispersed throughout which ask for more time to discern the meaning behind them. The overall effect may be one of sparseness, but there is a little more to this than meets the eye for those that are willing to scrutinise. Furthermore, those purchasing one of the first 500 Alpha-Beta prints can also take home a limited edition vinyl 12” entitled ‘Word Symphony’ by Magne F, taking flight from a-ha’s newest musical offering.
