How did you get that job?

Name Moira Black

Job Title 2012 & 2014 Programme Co-ordinator

Company Scottish Arts Council Website www.creativescotland.org.uk

When did you start your job? I started working for Scottish Arts Council in March 2007 as a Grants Co-ordinator, this involved distributing funds to various Scottish arts organisations and also to Scottish artists, dancers and musicians. I gained a really useful insight into Scottish Arts this way and how important it is to support and nurture the arts on our own turf. I studied Arts and Social Science at University and took an interest in Scottish Studies from the start. After working for the Grants Department for 2 years I was asked to apply for my current position which very luckily for me is based in Glasgow, where I live. As much as I love Edinburgh, I don’t love the price of a train fare everyday making my wallet lighter. The fact that this role is so interesting makes the lack of commute even better! So what does your role actually involve? My job title does exactly what is says on the tin. Working on the cultural programme for London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 involves a lot of careful planning and co-ordinating to ensure that we can maximise public involvement in these two major events. The fact that they are happening so close together on our shores is unlikely to happen again in our lifetime and our aim is to make the most of it. My role is very adaptable, no day is the same. The simplest way for me to explain to you what I do would be to cheekily plug a link to our website: www.scottisharts.org.uk/1/professional/london2012andglasgow2014.aspx

Best / Worst Aspects? The best aspect of this job is that I’m dealing with something new everyday. One day I can nd myself organising a hosting session with lots of Scotland’s key cultural players the next I’ll be looking at a plan to build a replica stadium from Lego or speaking to an artist about his plans to create a football pitch in the middle of a forest. Being part of the audience at an outdoor Scratch n Sniff Cinema event we organised in partnership with Edinburgh City Council and the BBC as part of Open Weekend was a highlight. The worst aspect is that the pace never slows down and there is literally too much to do! It is dangerously tempting to check your e-mails at rather unsociable hours at night.

Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Moira at the start of her career? Stop worrying so much and trust your instincts. It’s taken me a while to realise this one. To anybody else looking to work in the arts I’d say gain as much experience as possible in whatever way you can and learn from your seniors and peers at every opportunity. Oh and also to a young Moira… the 7.30am CityLink bus from Glasgow to Edinburgh is soul destroying. Just get the train. and nally . . . Tell us more about what is currently going on at the Scottish Arts Council. Transition to a fantastic new organisation called Creative Scotland. Check out the website for more info.
