Sir Charles Mackerras and Mozart is always a must- hear combination, and here he conducts the Symphony No 35 (‘Haffner’), about which its composer said it ‘positively amazed me’. Also with Strauss’ Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme and leading horn player Radovan Vlatkovic in Strauss’ Horn Concerto.

Friday 15 Glasgow Harpsichord Recital: Mahan Esfahani RSAMD, 100 Renfrew Street, 332 5057. 1pm. £9 (£6). The Iranian- born harpsichordist and BBC New Generation Artist, fast becoming established as a leading keyboardist of his generation, performs works by Byrd, Bull and Bach. Milngavie Music Club’s first concert of 2010 sees international prize-winning violinist Ani Batikian teamed with Scottish-based pianist Gustáv Fenyö in a richly varied programme, opening with Beethoven’s much loved Kreutzer Sonata and continuing with Martinu’s Sonata and works by Schoenberg, Prokofiev and Gershwin. RSNO Naked Classics Stripping Beethoven’s 7th Symphony bare, the RSNO’s enthusiastic

presenter Paul Rissmann reveals its all. Telling the stories behind the music with a bit of assistance from projections, lighting, interviews with players and the conductor, and, not to forget, the music itself, Naked Classics goes places not usually associated with a symphony orchestra’s performance on the concert platform. Edinburgh RSNO: Fauré Requiem Usher Hall, Lothian Road, 228 1155. 7.30pm. £10–£32 (concessions available). Contrasting works from late 19th century France, led by Stéphane Denève. The RSNO Chorus, Junior Chorus and soloists join the orchestra for Fauré’s tranquil choral masterpiece, followed by Roussel’s energetic Symphony No 3 and finally Ravel’s multi-faceted, ever more frantic La Valse for a brilliant finish. Please note that this is the concert’s only performance.
