Joseph Strick A long overdue retrospective of the films of Strick, a filmmaker as important to the evolution of American new wave and independent cinema as John Cassavetes. Now
best known for being the only filmmaker foolhardy enough to tackle Joyce’s Ulysses, Strick’s body of work is remarkable in that it breaches and intermingles the fictional and documentary forms to giddy effect. Highlights of this excellent season include 1963 Jean Genet play adaptation The Balcony (starring Shelley Winters and Peter Falk), his 1970 adaptation of Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer (pictured) and very obscure trucker flick Road Movie (1974). But don’t take our word for it get a season ticket and see them all. ■ Filmhouse, Edinburgh from Thu 14 Jan-Wed 3 Feb.
