How did you get that job?
Name Janine Sproule Job Title Enquiries Offi cer
Company Cultural Enterprise Offi ce Website www.culturalenterpriseoffi ce.co.uk
When did you start your job? I started in October and I’m still getting used to the commute through to Glasgow from Edinburgh. So what does your role actually involve? The Cultural Enterprise Offi ce is a specialist business support service for creative businesses and practitioners. We provide free expert advice, tailored information and training events. My role is to answer client enquiries with tailored information and direct them to organisations that can provide them with additional assistance.
Best / Worst Aspects? The best aspect of this job is helping people help themselves and provide them with the information they need to start taking their creative business ideas to the next stage. I have fi rst hand experience of using the CEO service too, when I opened Sierra Metro, a not for profi t gallery space in Edinburgh, last year, I found the information I received to be invaluable in helping me tackle parts of the start up process that I didn’t really understand. The worst aspect at the moment is getting up at 6am to catch my bus! Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Janine at the start of her career? Don’t be afraid of putting in the hours. When I fi rst left art college, like many graduates I worked two other jobs around the clock so I could volunteer unpaid. It was hard at times but a great way to get a variety of work and life experiences which have defi nitely benefi ted my professional development. Volunteering is always a good way to gain a better understanding of an industry or organisation that you would like to work within. It also helps to meet like minded people who can introduce you to opportunities and networks that may have not been known to you before. Underneath everything, I think genuine enthusiasm and being passionate about what you do or what you want to do will give you the boost you need to realise your goals.
