AFTER 35 YEARS of running a helpline for gay and lesbian people in Edinburgh, Lothian Gay & Lesbian Switchboard (LGLS) has taken its last call. The LGBT Centre for Health and Wellbeing has taken over the running of the helpline service and has adopted the former LGLS number of 0131 556 4049. The helpline will be available every Wed from 12.30–7pm. AN EDINBURGH woman named Mona Webster has left nearly half her £10m fortune to the Metropolitan Opera House. As well as giving to the Manhattan arts venue, she also left money to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in the UK.

NOT SO LOOPY Armando Iannucci’s In the Loopwas the big winner at this year’s Scottish BAFTAs, picking up gongs for best actor, best director and best writing. A spin-off from the BBC TV series The Thick of It, the film saw Sopranos star James Gandolfini rubbing shoulders with Iannucci regular and BAFTA-winner, Peter Capaldi. Daniela Nardini was the other big winner of the night, scooping best TV actress for her role in New Town.

N ot for nothing is Edinburgh’s Hogmanay thought to be one of the best in the world; five days of festivities jam-packed around an enormous street party. Now, with the confirmation that Princes Street will be open in time for the street party, the headliners are coming thick and fast. Young pups The Enemy (pictured) will showcase their wares on the Waverley Stage alongside Frightened Rabbit and Edinburgh rap-jazz collective Stanley Odd. Also in residence is Edinburgh based four-piece We Were Promised Jet Packs and BBC Radio Scotland’s Vic Galloway, who’ll rock up to guest DJ proceedings.

and Madness. Also confirmed are the ever-popular Cuban Brothers and Glitter Banditz, primed to present an evening of music at The Mound Party Stage, hosted by special guest DJ The Great Calverto. This accompanies the previously announced West End DJ Stage, boasting a Mylo DJ set with special guest DJs Gary & Tom from Snow Patrol and Richard Colburn from Belle & Sebastian. TRAD MUSIC AWARDS SHORTLIST Hands Up For Trad have announced the shortlist for the 2009 MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards. Nominated acts include Julie Fowlis (pictured), Face The West, Treacherous Orchestra, Session A9 and Lau, who released Arc Light earlier this year. The awards ceremony will take place in Dumfries on Sat 28 Nov, as part of the Homecoming Scotland Finale Celebrations. The public will now decide a winner in each of the 16 categories by voting at www.handsup fortrad/tradmusicawards until 20 Nov.
