PAPA DON’T PREACH Dear Sir I don’t recognise the names of any of the bands mentioned on your music pages last issue, whether they be grunge, indie, afro, jazz, soul rock or bluegrass. What happened to The Mamas and the Papas, or is it assumed your magazine is now only read by 20-30-year-old somethings? I am 58. Yours sincerely, Gordon Edinburgh

OVER THE HILL LIL’ Re: The F-word (641) After reading ‘The F-word’ I turned on the radio to hear Lily Allen bleat on about unhappy women, past 30, with no man in tow. She warbles, ‘When she was 22 the future looked bright / But she’s nearly 30 now and she’s out every night . . . There’s nothing to do and there’s nothing to say / Till the man of her dreams comes along picks her up and puts her over his shoulder.’ Emmeline Pankhurst must be spinning in her grave. A bit hypocritical, given Lily’s penchant for old buggers! No wonder her new bum-chum Kate Moss was scowling at her in recent photos. Susan Glasgow

MAKING A SPECTACLE

LETTER OF THE FORTNIGHT FLASH IN THE PAN

Re: Technology Special Although I enjoyed your technology special, the main issue I take with the whole thing is the suggestion that Spotify and 3D TV could change the world. In Mark Robertson’s article he talks about the many obsolete formats that have come along. It’s true, today’s new breakthrough will be yesterday’s betamax. Can we please wake up to the real pace of change, and not try and sensationalise the latest developments in jumbo TVs as something important. We’re all still going to be reading paper books and watching Last of the Summer Wine in 2D for many years to come, let’s be serious. Brendan, Glasgow Via email

THE LETTER OF THE ISSUE WILL RECEIVE ONE BOTTLE OF THE BLACK GROUSE WHISKY Smoky and Smooth a marriage of fine peated Scotch malt whiskies and The Famous Grouse

OFF THE WALL

Re: Park Life (641) Tragically, Falkirk Council voted on 7 October to close the Park Gallery in June 2010, with a further (as yet unknown) plan to relocate it to Callendar House after this time. We can still fight to save the gallery and keep it where it belongs. There’s still hope! There’s still time! The battle begins today!

Remember, councillors are

elected to serve the people, to follow their will, and they should

listen to those who put them there in the first place. If you want to save arts in Scotland, make your voice heard now! Spread the news far and wide.

I enjoyed last issue’s cover, particularly its usefulness in espionage (see image). More spy-friendly content in future please. Gary, Motherwell By email
