LETTER OF THE WEEK

SCOTLAND’S SHAME Re: David Byrne Edge Festival I was at David Byrne last night at the Playhouse. It was a great show, but is it just me, or are gig crowds in Scotland just full of radges? It was more like being on the terraces at Ibrox. The guy is a true artist and is known for trying to do different

things on stage at gigs costume changes, projections, that sort of thing. Put it this way he's not known for his audience sing-a- longs. So last night there were dancers on stage, which looked great. He tried to introduce a song, explaining where it came from, when he wrote it and talk about what he or the dancers were trying to do. But he was drowned out by nutjobs shouting requests for Talking Heads hits that were clearly going to be played in the encore if anywhere, or for him to 'Gaun yersel Davey Boy', or most amusingly 'Welcome Home big man'.

Why would anyone pay £40 and basically heckle the guy? There were a few altercations in the audience of people basically telling the nutters to shut up. The gig was being filmed, so we might all see what it looks like one day. Funnily enough the last time I was across at a gig in Edinburgh it was for Morrissey, and the same thing happened there. I know lots of performers roll out the line that they

love playing to a Scottish crowd, but this wasn't endearing local enthusiasm, it was embarrassing. Euan Glasgow THE LETTER OF THE ISSUE WILL RECEIVE ONE BOTTLE OF THE BLACK GROUSE WHISKY

COUNTRY FEEDBACK Re: Southern Fried Festival Country music comes to Perth You know, I think another reason that country music is so popular in Scotland is that the music has its roots (pun intended) in Scotland. The early bluegrass music and music from the Appalachian region, just as two examples, were fashioned by Scots and/or influenced by

Scottish music. So in a way, what is coming back at you now is based on something you helped create! Kingharvest, Scots in the US Comment posted at List.co.uk

ISLAND LIFE Re: Isle of Lewis Give ‘em a Minch Thanks for the Scottish Islands special. I love visiting the islands in the summertime, especially Lewis. The sun barely sets, and if you get the weather (if ...), the beaches look like the Caribbean except without the crowds.

However, like many other parts of rural Scotland now, tourism is the key industry, if not the only remaining one. So I'm still surprised by how difficult it can be to arrange a trip there due to Sunday basically being a write- off.

I know it's a contentious issue, with locals, incomers and tourists all having an opinion on Sunday ferries etc, but ultimately, the welfare of the community is something that the Church as a whole has traditionally looked after throughout history. Surely when that welfare is threatened because tourism, and hence local income, is made more difficult, then the church has stopped doing its job properly? Laura Glasgow
