PREVIEW FAMILY FUN GALLERY OF MODERN ART FAMILY FESTIVAL DAY GoMA, Glasgow, Sat 25 Jul
Letting your kids draw on an historical building is usually frowned upon by the powers that be. But at GoMA Family Festival Day, things are a little more relaxed. The floor of the Gallery of Modern Art’s Portico becomes a giant canvas just waiting to be filled with colourful chalk drawings (pictured). Inside the building itself, four separate galleries are turned over to the pursuit of fun. Building momentum with each year, the Festival Day features a diverse
programme of music and art activities, drawing on the expertise not just of GoMA staff but from around the city. Musician-in-Residence at Giant Productions, Dave Boyd will be holding percussion workshops, while the Village Storytelling Centre’s Jill Webster will explore GoMA’s current exhibition, Ethanol Buzzgrid by Rob Chum. Glasgow-based Chum is a Fine Art graduate whose work draws on animation, music and film and is ripe for interpretation. ‘The idea is to make connections with Rob’s artwork and find a way into it for all ages,’ explains GoMA’s Learning & Access Curator, Frances McCourt. ‘Rob’s work is free-flowing and really lends itself to exploring and stories, so it will be exciting to see what Jill does with it in her storytelling sessions.’
Already known for their excellent Saturday morning art sessions, the GoMA team will be offering a range of artistic pursuits, plus face painting and special discounts in the shop and café.
‘There will be lots of activities to choose from and dip in and out of,’ says McCourt. ‘So families can check our website or collect a flyer at GoMA to see the running times, then choose what they fancy. And it’s all free, with no need to book.’ (Kelly Apter)
