AEROPLANE

Location: Brussels. Belgium. Occupation: Cosmic orbiters of Planet Disco.

Should I be excited? We think so. Having planted the magic beans in Glasgow with an infamous performance at H8.P last September, Aeroplane return to spray their flourishing pop crop with another dose of psychedelic disco dust and super-charged Balearic bio-boosters. ‘leoaric’? Oh God, should I look out my 6816 do! Mar album? Not quite. The reference is more emotive than descriptive. and Aeroplane’s music policy has little in common with the typical audio perception that the old ‘Balearic' tag usually throws up. Part of a mini resurgence of style gone by. the interior of the Aeroplane sound could well be furnished with the opulent trappings of a utopian discotheque. However. the whole thing is bound by a contemporary structure. galvanized with modern day melodious electronics. Disco with balls.

Phewl I just pictured myself In a baggy denim shirt with curtains. What’s the story then? Growing up under the continental concrete canopy of Brussels' southern suburbs. producer Vito Deluca and DJ Stephen Fasano were brought together through a mutual love of vinyl. Since combining their talents and launching Aeroplane. they've completed a number of grade-A remixes for a diverse selection of artists including Friendly Fires. MGMT and Grace Jones. Their own material makes up a large part of the on board entertainment at an Aeroplane gig but you can expect to see an array of associated styles both old and new flying past your window. Any flnsl thoughts? Be prepared for a purchase when the boys finally release their debut artist album later in the year. For an indication of its content and quality. sample the delights of 2007‘s ‘Caramellas' on Eskimo Records and know that Belgium‘s other beat brothers the Dawaeles. aka 2 Many DJs. are on hand to lend their Soulwax studio skills as producers. HIP HOP BREAKS DJ VADIM Departure Lounge at the Caves, Edinburgh, Sat 30 May

The promised summer heatwave arrives early with sunshine beats and heavy hip hop sounds. Imagine the Notting Hill Carnival played out on a tropical island and you’re halfway to capturing the good time grooves of DJ Vadim. Bringing a full live set (with vocals, keyboards and Vadim manning the decks and computers) to the all-embracing world of Departure Lounge and their love of jazz, funk and Latin, it’s also especially great to see him back in Scotland after a recent battle with cancer (Vadim was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma back in September of 2008).

Much has been made of Vadim’s Russian origins, however he spent his formative years in the UK. ‘I grew

up in the 805,’ he explains. ‘At school girls listened to pop and boys liked either heavy metal or hip hop. I wasn‘t into dressing in black and having greasy long hair; I liked hip hop, it's colourful, it’s dancey, it's crazy, it‘s rebellious, it felt good.‘

Vadim never sits still - running his own Jazz Fudge Records before signing to Ninja Tuna then moving to BEE in 2007. He was nominated for a Latin Grammy for his work with Spanish hip hop supergroup 7 Notas 7 Colores alongside his own albums (as DJ Vadim, Little Aida, One Self and The Bug among others) as well as collaborations with various other DJs and hip hop stars (most notably Mr Thing, Killa Kella, Blu Rum and John Ellis as The Russian Percussion). ‘When I’m not sleeping I’m making music,‘ he laughs, ‘it‘s a great way to live.’ (Henry Northmore)
