RESPONSE TIME Re: Fifty Dead Men Walking (626) In response to Martin McGartland's comments (Letters page. Issue 627) about my review of the film Fifty Dead Men Wa/k/ng, based on McCartland's own account of his experience as a British Sen/ices informant in Northern Ireland. Mr McGartland claims that I gave the impression that the film was an accurate portrayal of his life. Intact I used both the phrases 'loose adaptation' and 'liberal adaptation' in the reView. In addition, the version of the film I saw some months ago at a press screening had no disclaimers on it and haying not read McGartland's book (a claim I never make in the article) I was unaware of the real story.
like all conscientious reViewers. l was trying to connect With the film in guestion not its source riiaterial and for McGartland to query something that by his own admission has no connection Willi his book (apart from the lead and subsidiary characters usrng the same names) seems to me a cheap way of promoting his book of the same name. LOOSE THREADS Re: Independent Shopping Guide (627)
l'd rarely be one to poo-poo an attempt at rallying the troops to support independent businesses. but I think this article has been rather poorly researched. Since the inception of the Recesson (dum dum dooooml) market research shows that Customers are actually turning their backs on poor quality garments and are instead choosmg to save longer and invest in quality purchases — perhaps a Vintage or handmade piece. Credit due to The List for acknowledging the role indie busmesses play in
shaping communities. but it might have been more useful to print this six months ago. Hardly cutting edge (OUTIIEIIISIII from the shopping section. Roberta Tweed

Thanks for your comments Roberta. /'m glad you share our passion for iridei)eri(ir->rit shops.
The research conducted for this feature invo/ved conversations With over 700 /oca/ shopkeepers, rather than With shoppers. and the picture from them was pretty h/eak.
