How did you get that job?
Name Rachel Sivills
Job Title Event Producer Company Glasgow Art Fair
When did you start your job? I started working on the Art Fair in 2004 as Event Co-ordinator, and took over the role of Producer in September 2008.
So what does your job actually involve? Everything! Researching potential galleries to participate in the Fair
and overseeing the selection process. then making sure that everything we've promised them is delivered on site. Alongside this I’m responsible for development. securing funding and sponsorship. and guiding the event’s PR. Basically I'm the glue that holds all the elements of the event together!
Best / Worst Aspects? Best: watching our temporary home emerge in the middle of the city centre. and then observing exhibitors and visitors get so immersed in the Fair that they forget they're in the middle of George Square. Worst: it‘s the same with any event - no matter how much planning and organisation is done beforehand. something is always sent to test us when we’re on site — but having a challenge and solving the problem is also one of the things I love about the job. ..
What did you do before you started this job? I've worked on events and festivals since graduating, working my way up through the ranks from Fringe ticket seller to Box Office Manager. Edinburgh Festival Venue Manager to Hogmanay Production & Site Co-ordinator and lots of other bits and pieces in between.
What's the best way to get a job like yours? It's a bit of a cliche. but get as much experience as you can. be it through volunteering or freelancing. Be ambitious and take initiative. It also helps if you‘re good at multi-tasking and have the patience of a saint!
What advice would you give to a young Rachel at the start of her career? Don't be afraid to ‘network' and make the most of the people you meet and opportunities that pment themselves to you. I always wanted to work the Festival circuit in Australia but still haven‘t quite managed it...
We hear you can Trapeze? How did that start?
I volunteered to help on a show called ‘Sticky‘ when l was still at Uni and one of the performers mentioned that she
ran Aerial classes in Glasgow's West End. I’m all for trying anything once so thought I‘d give it a go. I also liked the idea of having a back-up plan of running away to join the circus if my Final exams went horribly wrong!
