The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century 1910

There's no point going over old ground: if you have even the vaguest interest in comics you‘ll know of the genius of Alan Moore. Watchmen, V For Vendetta and From Hell are established classics of the medium, as of course is Saga of the Swamp Thing. Moore may have fallen out with DC in the intervening years and there‘s already been a myriad of Swamp Thing reprints on the market over the years - but this latest collection is the first ever to reprint Moore's debut issue (‘Loose Ends‘ Moore‘s first American comic from 1983). A rare treat indeed, it’s a complete reinvention of the horror comic and justifiably where Moore made his first big impact; a darkly intelligent monster tale that completely subverts what had gone before.

From one of Moore’s oldest stories to his latest opus, the first part of the third volume of his League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. It’s an unlikely ‘superhero‘ team of literary characters; in this case, the likes of Raffles, Orlando and Carnaki the ghost finder. As you‘d expect it’s full of Moore’s dark comedy and spiky wit and, as always, Kevin O‘Neil‘s art is equally razor sharp.

While this first of the three parts that will make up ‘Volume III’ (thus bring the League right up to the modern age) does work as a stand-alone story, its dark, ominous premonitions act as a great set up for the story to come. (Henry Northmore)
