How did you get that job?

Name Carrie Maginn

Job Title Operations Manager Company Stills

When did you start your job? I began volunteering at

Stills in 2005, six months later, I was offered the position of Resource Coordinator. I began as Operations Manager in the summer of 2007. Is that climbing the ladder?

So what does your job actually involve? What does it not involve is more like it. In a few words, my role is to manage the smooth operations of the whole organization; that is overseeing programme delivery, our marketing and business plan, finances and personal. . .and I take on just about

what ever else gets put on the plate. It's a bit like project management. It’s a lot like juggling.

Best / Worst Aspects? The people are what I love most. Stills’ is an inspiring and growing community of individuals and artists. Providing creative experiences to the public is highly rewarding. The worst? Well, I’ve yet to find someone working in the visual arts sector for the money.

What did you do before you started this job? Begged, borrowed and stole. Quite literally in Ireland I begged, in Holland I borrowed, in Portugal I stole. It wasn’t till I moved to Taiwan that I began to take my art and myself seriously. Five years on from that I found myself starting over in Edinburgh.

What’s the best way to get a job like yours? Real and honest passion, dedication, ambition, self- initiative. and confidence.

What advice would you give to a young Game at the start of her career? The start of what I call my current career began relatively recently. at which point I had quite a clear idea of what I wanted, and dare I say, I wasn’t exactly young. However, I always advice to remember that the path consists mostly of finding out what you don't want to do; it’s a series of experiences and elimination. You'll know when you’ve found what is right for you, because you won't let anyone take it away. Liking your job is a lucky position to be in.

Tell us about the best photo you’ve ever taken... Accidently photographing members of a rural Taiwanese mafia family was pretty good. By accident, I mean I wasn’t aware they were mafia. l was just downing a few tins of Taiwanese beer with them on the beach. The mafia part came later... pointed out rather shockingly by a gallery attendee at the exhibition opening. All good in the end. Crackin’ photo.
