WHIFF CLANGER Re: Scotland The Great (621) I completely agree that the aroma in west Edinburgh is one of the loveliest smells of any City (No 7:3 in ‘79 Great Things about Scotland'i However, it's not a brewery that you are smelling — breweries don't have a strong smell — it is the malting of the barley for the breWing and whisky industries which generates this wonderful sweet. sticky smell. lan Ritchie, Lasswade Comment left at List.co.uk
TARTAN FUTURES Re: Wha’s like us? (621) I eriioyed Kirstin Innes' article about Scottish identity. I don't know one person who can stomach those cheesy Homecoming ads. With Sean Connery and Lulu reinforCing every hackeyed Heilan' cliche going. but I do know plenty of people who care about modern Scottish music. film, fashion and writing. Personally I was 'over' the Homecoming celebrations before they began. and feel the coverage had reached saturation pOint long before Burns' anniversary. LETTER OF THE F ORTNIGI'IT
NOSTALGIA NAUSEA Re: Are you dunroamin'? (621) Why are we dedicating so much time and press space to wrstful reminiscence? Yes it was Burns' Day and es we base the QLiixotiC crusade. Homecoming. but I for one refuse to buy into this 'culture of nostalgia.
Only last month everyone was weeping over a rundown retail chain they'd not shopped in for ten years. all because they bought a record there in the 70s! The bottom line is: if you buy from Amazon. dry yOur eyes. and if you left Scotland for opportunity elsewhere then visit now and again. but please stop lamenting in airport lounges thousands of miles away.
Why aren't we Wiping out the sentimental stereotype instead of nurturing it!

It's a lot of fun. The way they've laid everything out is really clever and the special effects are great but I didn't find it scary at all.

SHORT, GREEN AND HANDSOME Re: Wha's like us? (621) I'd like to add to the unflattering representation of Scots in film the villainous Davre Jones iin Pirates of the Caribbeani and a fat. green ogre who. while undeniably lovable. is nonetheless a fat. green ogre iShrek).
However. I would like to pornt out that these damning depictions are gender specmc As a single female IiVing in Glasgow I am constantly faced With chubby gargoyles who aVOid buying drinks even when I've listened to their dull whining for over an hour. The invalidity of these representations. for me. is yet to be proven.
