PREVIEW it El lN() SLABS OF THE TABERNACLE Twisted Wheel, Glasgow, Sat 7 Feb.

‘It‘s not that we don‘t want to book bigger-name DJs and artists,‘ says Slabs of the Tabernacle DJ and co- promoter Andrew Ingram, ‘but we just can’t afford them. So our club's the way it is for financial reasons as much as anything else.‘ Which isn't an indictment of the Slabs experience, or an admission that those involved do things by half - for ten months now, the club has brought an impressive array of under the radar and grassroots DJs and live artists to Glasgow from around the UK and Europe.

That roster continues this month with Turin’s passEnger and xluve, a seemingly capital letter-phobic duo who have been approved by Laurent Garnier, Convextion and ‘Mad‘ Mike Banks and who stir up old

memories for the Slabs team. ‘Everyone involved in the night is a big fan of Detroit techno,‘ says Ingram, ‘so we all love this pair. Of course they’re from nowhere near Detroit, but you wouldn‘t know it to listen to them.‘

The duo are joining an eclectic line-up of previous guests, who include Rotterdam‘s Mark du Mosch (of Moustache Records, who will be back at Slabs for a showcase night later this year), Glasgow’s Fancy and Spook, and Ali Renault of Heartbreak fame. Ingram credits the widely varied tastes he shares with fellow promoters Johnny Hunter, Joel Shaw and Brian d‘Souza (the latter of whom used to run Edinburgh‘s Pogo Vogue, amongst others) for Slabs‘ pic‘n’mix nature. ‘We all like techno, some of us disco, some of us ltalo; it means that the club can be something entirely different each month, depending on the guest we have.‘ (David Pollock)

Name: The Unabomhers

Also known as: Mancunian duo luke Cowrlrey and Justin Crawford.

Occupation: pFQlTTIClSlllp electro funk producers. remixers and 0th of longstanding Vintage You might know them in their Other guise. Llektrons. who are heaVIer on the electro than the funk

Where do they come from? From little spoken of beginnings. at least in Crawford's case. as the bassist in early 90s post baggyists New last Automatic Daffodils. Cowrlrey's Vintage is unknown. although the pair have been working together as proto Unabombers and under various other guises Since 1995. Their biggest claim to fame. of cOurse. is not for any of their production work. but as the originators of Manchester's seminal Electric Chair night.

How’s that going for them? It isn't. After ten years. the boys decided to call a halt to the night in January of last year With its reputation unworn from hanging arOiind too long. Then they went off and started a new annual festival in Croatia named Electric Elephant. and dished up a retrospective mix CD entitled Electric Chair Saved My Life in late ‘08. Then there's the Elektrons protect. which Sired the album Red Light, Don 't Stop. and sometime towing work as both Electric Sculs and The Electric Seuls Soundsystem. Keeping up With all that? Anyway. their reputation has been made as genre-straddling party DJs in the main.

Perfect for Trouble then? Yep. This Isn't their first time. though the pair are veterans of the club. having first played there in 2004. Providing support in the back room will be the also very Troublesome pairing of DJ Scope and Kid Bel. who run their own nights Choice Cuts and Good Foot in Dublin and Aberdeen respectively. and of course the club's residents Hobbes and Erik D'Viking will be helping steer things along. (David Pollock)

I The Unabombers play Trouble at Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, Fri 13 Feb.
