CCA is a unique experimental art space that supports artists based in Scotland within an internationally renowned programme. The successful candidate will work closely with the General Manager and take overall responsibility for co-ordinating and monitoring the ef cient running of CCA’s Box Of ce and Front of House staff and operations, ensuring the needs of the programme are ef ciently met, communication is effective and the centre runs smoothly. You will be line manager for Duty Managers, Information and Sales Assistants and Front of House staff. Previous experience in a similar role is required.

As part of this team, you will play a key role in the co-ordination and development of arts initiatives and facilities throughout the area.
You will have specific responsibility to develop programmes which use the arts to improve health and well-being and to improve access to the arts for all – through targeted work.
The job requires experience and knowledge of arts development project management, marketing and audience development. As you will be working to agreed plans and budgets, you must be able to prioritise a heavy workload. A willingness to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends is also essential.

When did you start your job? I started working as an Art Dept Assistant and Scenic Artist for various fi lm productions before taking on more responsibility as Art Director for Shorts. I had a full time job at the time and a lenient boss who gave me chunks of time off to go and make fi lms. This meant I could pay the rent and persue my desired career. Art Dept work is often unpaid, if you’re working on low budget shorts, although it’s great fun. After a while you can break into the world of paid work and go freelance, which is what I did in 2006. Every production throws new challenges at you, giving you a decent gauge of your capabilities. This gives you confi dence (not too much though) to keep going for bigger jobs until you’re happy taking on the role of Production Designer.
So what does your job actually involve? A Production Designer works closely with the Director in order to achieve the look of the fi lm. Some Directors know exactly what they want to see and others will focus on the story and directing the actors and are happy for the Production Designer to provide ideas and designs of how the fi lm could look. This includes the fi lm set, props, and special effects. Although Costume and Make-up are separate departments, a Production Designer will have to ensure there is continuity between Costume/ Make-up and the over all design of the fi lm. A Production Designer works with a motley crew of skilled people who make props, build the fi lm set and work on set during the shoot in order to bring what was initially an idea in the pub or a sketch on the drawing board, to life. Best/worst aspects? The best thing is when you achieve something that had initially seemed incredibly daunting. The worst however is not being given enough budget to build what you want to!
What did you do before you started this job? I studied Art and Interior Design and TV Set Design and also worked in a few different creative and managerial jobs What’s the best way to get a job like yours? Do a course or a series of short courses to get an idea of whats its about and build up some basic art dept skills. Then throw yourself in the deep end and get some Art dept experience on student shorts.
Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Rebecca at the start of her career? Go for it! Film making is bloody hard work and its not for everyone. But if you are cut out for it then it feels amazing to be doing what you love every day.
