Name Lynne Geary Job Title Sales and Marketing Manager
Company The Edinburgh Conference Centre at Heriot-Watt University When did you start your job? 10 March 2008
So what does your job actually involve? Encouraging businesses, organisations and individuals to bring their meetings, conferences, weddings and other special events to the conference centre. The successful running of the Sales & Marketing department and meeting with clients are a huge part of my job. Best/worst aspects? The best aspects are getting to work with a great team and some wonderful clients. It is a joy to promote the centre as it is such a fantastic product. I love to meet new people so this job couldn’t be better -- we host lots of large events such as the recent SNP Spring Conference and the Stem Cell UK event. There are no worst aspects for me. We are lucky that the ECC is riding the storm of the credit crunch at present and we are looking forward to cementing our place in the coming years as a top conference venue.
What did you do before you started this job? I worked for Thistle Hotels, Caledonian Hotels and Scottish Highland and Stakis amongst others.
What’s the best way to get a job like yours? Try to get some experience in events or travel and tourism and try to complete as much training as possible along the way. The best way is to start from the bottom and work your way up. Hotel management is also a great way of learning about the industry and will provide you with outstanding customer service skills.
Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Lynne at the start of her career? I think that most people tend to think short-term with regards to what they can achieve in their career and how quick. My advice would be to think long term from the beginning instead of rushing to get ahead. Be patient, let your career develop and allow it to follow the path that you want it to. What are you most looking forward to at ECC in 2009? I am looking forward to the coming year and the challenges that it will bring. We are hosting lots of important events over the next few years such as the International Society for Animal Genetics in 2010. The centre hosts a variety of events every year from microbiology conferences to charity masquerade balls and political conferences which keeps things interesting. 2009 will be no different and, most of all, I’m looking forward to meeting an array of different people.
