Now in its third year, this amazing festival of African cinema opens with a screening of
Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine’s brilliant 1969 tale of agrarian and political oppression The Land, a fitting tribute to Chahine who died recently. Amongst a very diverse and adventurous programme that includes shorts (Agenda pictured), animation, horror, classics, award- winning contemporary films, Nollywood and a wide variety of documentaries, Malian director Souleymane Cissé and Burkinabe director Gaston Kaboré will both present retrospectives of their work. As always there will be expert introductions, discussions, Q&A and live African music in the Filmhouse bar and this year the festival will host an African club night at the Bongo Club and many other special events. If you can only see a few films The List recommends Kaboré’s gentle bush fable Wend Kuuni, Ousmane Sembene’s Faat Kine (part of the director’s African women trilogy), anything by Cissé (Baara, Finye, Yeleen) and Andy Jones’ documentary As Old As My Tongue: The Myth and Life of Bi Kidude.
