ARTS I CATERING I EDUCATION I MEDIA PUBLIC SECTOR I VOLUNTARY I RETAIL I CHARITIES

Name Lenny Love (and yes, that is my real name)

Job Title Media/publicity manager for VEGAS! / DJ When did you start your job? October 1997

So what does your job actually involve? The 'media/publicity’ part entails keeping media outlets and websites up-to-date with VEGAS! information. I also edit and caption the photos taken at VEGAS! nights which are posted on the VIP section of the club website. The DJ job keeps me off the streets at night and, apart from VEGAS! I also DJ at many different nights and events from a weekly swing-dance/Iindy-hop night to private parties, charity fund-raisers, award ceremonies, corporate events and weddings. Playing all sorts of music in all sorts of venues all over the planet along the way, ranging from my favourite venue, the Famous Spiegeltent, to pubs, clubs, art galleries, hotel function suites, outdoor festivals, castles, ships, and (once) on the shore of a lake in North Carolina.

Best / worst aspects? The best bits are people asking about a song or artist I've played and having a room full of happy people at the end of the night. The worst bit is never enough time to play all the tunes I'd like to play and, of course, the sheer hell of having to share a dressing room with the VEGAS! showgirls but, hey, somebody's got to do it...

What did you do before you started this job? I began DJing in my local youth club when I was about 14. I left school at 16 after my father died and before I could take any exams and I went straight to work. I've had a 'varied' career path; hiring jet-skis on a beach in Australia, concert promoter, record shop manager, record company promotions man, tour manager, and radio producer/presenter.

What's the best way to get a job like yours? Bribe/blackmail the boss?

Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Lenny Love at the start of his career? Finish school, go to college/uni, grow-up and get a proper job. Or get a back pack, travel around the world, and don't come back till you've discovered something about yourself and/or the world that you'd never learn at home. Forget about a 'proper' 9-to-5 job and learn to love beans on toast? Don't spend all your money on wine, women & song? Stay friendly with anyone that could be a liver-donor in the future? Always carry safety pins, a swiss army knife, ten quid, and a roll of gaffer- tape with you.

And never ever forget... if you don‘t promote, a terrible thing happens - nothing.

As you’re known for smooth moves and funky beats, what’s on the VEGAS! record player this week? A killer version of 'I Don't Need No Doctor', by The Village Callers, AI Escobar‘s latin-jazz cover of “Tighten Up', Acker Bilk singing 'l'm An Old Cowhand From The Rio Grand', “Gimme Some', by Nina Simone, and the Trio Valore version of Amy Winehouse's 'Fiehab'.
