PREVIEW BURLESOUE TEAZE Studio 24, Edinburgh, Fri 22 Aug.

‘Teaze isn’t just a burlesque night’, says Amy Telford, promoter of Teaze, and she’s right. There will be a burlesque show on earlier in the night, but DJs of various genres - from swing to techno and metal to alternative - will then take over until the wee small hours. And it’s also a charity fundraiser for St Columba’s Hospice, 3 cause which is very close to Telford’s heart.

‘This is the second time we’ve run a Teaze night,’ says Telford, ‘the first was in May and it was very successful, really busy, and it earned lots of money for Freak, an Edinburgh arts collective. Of course the Burlesque performers are the highlight [Telford will be performing herself, under her alias Tania Twisted], but we’ll also have a troupe of swing dancers, a bunch of artists creating freestyle live art in the corridor, and competition prizes from Electric Cabaret, an alternative clothing store.’

As far as the evening’s burlesque element goes, the theme of the club is ‘A Night at the Movies’, and each performance will be themed around a certain film or genre. Telford says that those involved will be coming from around Scotland and even up from England in one or two cases, while there will be male performers too. ‘The first time we did this,’ says Telford, ‘it was meant to be a one-off, but the response was so good we decided to do it again. It’s a good way to raise money for charity, but an even better way to have a load of fun.’ (David Pollock)

THE AFTERPARTY

Queen’s Park Glasshouse, Glasgow, Sat 23 Aug.

As the various currents of carnival activity begin to evaporate from the streets of Glasgow's Southside on this high-summer Saturday. some of the finest DJ talent in the city Will be taking to the decks in the stunning environs of the Queen's Park Glasshouse. It’s a charity event spanning both rooms of this unusual venue. and everyone on the bill at this party is donating their services free of charge. Event organiser Samantha Bagg says that. despite the fact no fees will be paid. rustling up interest was no pr(‘)blem: ‘Everyone on the bill has been great about giving up their time for free. I don't think anyone has any doubts as to the importance of the ChildLine telephone counselling serVIce. The fact that all the acts are helping us to raise money by getting involved is bnlliant.‘

It's testament of the reservoir of goodwill that can be tapped in Glasgow's club scene that. once Bagg started making tentative phone calls about the event. it started to organise itself. Benevolent spinners include TWitch from Optimo. Andy Divine from the Art School. Mr Nice of Freakmoves. Kev Stevens (Buff Club). Craig Moogroove and the inimitable Chakra. The more observant among you Will notice that It's not often you'll find Twitch playing records in Glasgow on a Saturday. such is his touring schedule: 'I'm seldom available in Glasgow on a Saturday night, but because I've known Sam for so long and it's a good cause. I am glad to do it.‘ (John Regan)

Name Paul Woolford

Also known as Bobby Peru (also Willem Defoe's character in David Lynch's Wild at Heart), Hip Therapist (just a pun, really) and more.

Occupation “Picking the cultural zeitgeist like a bogey‘. says his MySpace headline. Ick. We prefer to think of it as repackaging the acid house sound in a minimal. technology- heavy format for the current Ibiza generation.

How so? Give his MySpace a listen. ‘Analogue' is a dead word in the Woolford household, it seems, as each track bursts with the pop and hiss of digital synths and keyboards. There’s still a rich futuristic atmosphere in what he does. though, and it was enough to get him annual residencies at Space in Ibiza through the latter half of this decade.

How did he get there In the first place? Leeds boy Woolford - an adopted son whose birth parents are apparently an Annie Lennox impersonator and a jazz drummer who played with Squarepusher - bought his first record at the age of eight and his first turntable when he was 12. At the age of 17 came another first, when he walked into his hometown superclub Back to Basics and thought: 'I have to play here one day.’ Making his first record at 21 with fellow Leeds DJ Tony Senghore. Woolford has gone on to unleash an array of his own releases and remixes. He plays around the world. has charmed the likes of Pete Tong, Darren Emerson and Junior Sanchez with his tracks and also held down a residency at Basics itself.

What’s he up to now? The Truth, the follow-up album to 2005's Erotic Discourse was released earlier this year and is the best place to explore his austere sound. Falling under the Bobby Peru banner, it also features a collaboration with Green Velvet. (David Pollock)
