An appreciation of the historic art of tapestry is not strictly necessary to enjoy this, one of two shows launching Dovecot as a new exhibiting space for art, craft and design. The venue for this exhibition is Brady's studio: a coiwerted slahle. which visually correlates to the photographer '5; studio in Michelangelo Antonioni's classic lElfSOs tilrn Blow Up. l rein the starting point of the RS) on the exterior door. this is a carefully considered and composed exhibition ahout the construction of the concept of ‘the artist' and "the artist's studio, in which the entire building and its contents must he considered as part of the work.
Inside the whitewashed space are paintings, found sculptures. pieces of neon and video works. While these are restricted to hIack. white and silver, there are colours present through the word 'reii' in a picture's caption and an unlit hlue lighthulh.
lhis is higth conceptual work. featuring rnultiple references to Blow Up and l ellini's 8 1/9 hoth tilins essentially ahout an artist cracking up as well as reler‘ences to modern art. While it cerizllni‘. wouldn't hurt to he larniliar with Hur'en, l lavin. Stella and other modern artists. it is not ahsolutely necessary.
