NO HOLDS BARD
Re: Paul Gravett
Why, when we have such a fine tradition of comics and cartooning in this country. do we feel the need to import a style from elsewhere?
‘Some of the more interesting Manga isn‘t actually coming out of Japan.’ Means what? 80. using timeless British classics like Shakespeare, messing about with the words and dropping them in some far-off planet worlds — that's ‘more interesting"? I really don't think so. I'd rather see them converted into the Mysore School of Indian art. Now that would be new and different! Scotsdragon Bath Comment left at list.co.uk
ALTERNATIVE TAKE Re: Simon Singh
How dare Simon Singh attack homeopathy? ‘People need to ignore a lot of this over-priced. made-up twaddle'? Over- priced? Maybe he should try being able to afford drugs from the lethal pill-pushers at the NHS. The fact of the matter is that alternative medicine helps millions of people around the world get over ailments that so- called 'conventional' medicine cannot. l for one will not be attending his event at the Book Festival, and I sincerely hope

LETTER OF THE FORTNIGHT
COFFEE TO GO
Re: Beanscene
Susie Ling Edinburgh
Having only just recovered from the disappearance of Plaisir Du Chocolat, I now hear that Beanscene is about to vanish from the Central Belt. The news that the homegrown coffee chain is going into administration received nothing more than a token mention in one of your news columns last week: surely. as a magazine that prides itself on promoting good local grub. you should be making more of a hullabaloo as another two favourites morph into American chains?

ED TRIP Re: Ed Byrne We came down from Aberdeen to the Fringe especially to see Ed. He was on top form — witty and perceptive as ever. He had a load of new material and his jokes on marriage were partiCLilarly funny.
I would totally recommend his show to everyone who likes a laugh. I only wish he was on for

Re: Hamilton’s Bar Kitchen The food here is excellent, especially if you don't want to have a full-blown meal. There are imaginative salads and grilled skewers as well as pub
; grub like burgers and fish and chips — all fresh and crispy. The
3 bar is lively and fun. but the
atmosphere doesn't transfer well to the dining area. Even though there can be a long wait for food on a busy night, the staff are pleasant and polite. Betsy
