Multi-genre music festival announces 2008 programme

I might be all quiet in the Central Belt.
but the cultural flurry up North
contimres this fortnight with the launch of sound 2008. which sets its musical stall in Aberdeen this October.
Now in its fourth year. the multi—genre festival will feature two themed weekends for the first time: one dedicated to the saxophone and the second to classical and electro-acoustic music. ()f the 7() events taking place. highlights of this year's four- day programme include appearances by Rob llall. Andy Scott and Martin Kershaw. lilectro-acoustic talent Kim (‘asconc will also be on-site to showcase her musical wares.
(‘lassical world premieres come courtesy of Sally Beamish. Pippa Murphy and 'l‘hea Musgrave. and world-renowned Finnish fiddler l’ckka Kuusisto (pictured. right) also makes a much anticipated appearance with the Scottish linsemble.
A wide range of recitals. workshops. master classes and community events completes the line-up. and there‘s a strong dance element to proceedings too: dancel.ive! will create a multi art—form extravaganza in the North liast in conjunction with the programme.

'Particularly exciting this year is the addition of new venues including the recently refurbished Salmon Bothy in Portsoy. and Aberdeen’s Beach Ballroom. where were holding both the community saxophone day and the concert with Andy Scott and (‘harlotte llarding.‘
Ian Smith. Head of Music for the Scottish Arts Council. who help fund the event. said: 'lt is difficult to believe that sound has only existed in its current form for three years. as it has become in that short time a significant member of the Scottish festivals circuit. and is an excellent example of how to inspire community involvement at all levels.'

RIMS? DZE’S novel Midnight's Children has won the Best of the Booker prize, as voted for by the public. The book, first published in 1981, beat five other former Booker winners. Peter Carey, Pat Barker, JM Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer and JG Farrell were also shortlisted for the pnze.
PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN DOCUMENTS of Franz Kafka are to be examined by experts after being found locked away in 3 Tel Aviv flat for 40 years. The papers were found in the home of the secretary of Kafka’s literary executor.

I Edinburgh club Cabaret Voltaire has been crowned the best club in Scotland, beating stiff competition from the Arches and the Garage. As well as picking up the prize for Vodkapom Nightclub of the Year at the Dram Scottish Licensed Trade Awards 2008, Cab Vol's Bar Manager Rachel Gregson also pocketed Kopparberg Bar Personality of the Year. ‘I am so very proud,’ said Cabaret Voltaire owner, Sarah David. ‘I believe what sets the Cab apart from other venues is its firm commitment to the pursuit of new music and its dedication to bringing quality entertainment to such an intimate environment in the capital.’
