I've just tried to book a table for four on a Saturday night at the Plumed Horse in Edinburgh. They took my name and phone number and wanted my credit card details including the three digit security number on the back of the card. I refused to give this so they refused to take my booking. It's the first time I‘ve ever come across Such a request. Is it acceptable for them to do this?

P/umed Horse owners Tony BerthWick and Ian Bruce said: 'We are very sorry to hear anyone has had cause for complaint. On a Saturday we always ask for credit card details because yeti wouldn 't believe the impact losmg a table of four or more can have on a business of our si/e. If someone cancels 70 minutes before they are due. at say 8 o 'clock, or simply doesn 't show up. there is often no hope of filling that table. That can have a very negative impact on our busmess. particularly if more than one table does it on any given night. '

I particularly liked the work of Jenny Paine and Kitty Jones. The illustration and costume design are also really good.

legitimate gripe about folk booking tables and then not turning up, which is why many take a phone number. It's possible that the Plumed Horse — which isn 't a large restaurant — has been burnt in this way The legal position is that when yOu book a table in a restaurant yOu enter into a contract. If you break that contract then the restaurant has grounds to claim compensation. '

I am also a former photography student so it's interesting to see that work. The tapestry's been very good as well.

I've just brought some friends in to see the show. I quite liked the fashion and printmaking masters' course work.
Scottish word he is. The rest of the c0untry's arts publications may conveniently forget their roots in fav0ur of popular — usually American — faces on front covers. so it's nice to see that every now and again you slip some home-grown talent in: even if it is at the back! Now all we need is an issue in Gaelic!

Re: Visual Art (605)
The reView of the Glasgow School of Art MFA degree show drew attention to silversmithing and jewellery work by Robyn Crerar and Gill Scrimgeour. We would like to clarify that jewellery and Silversmithing was exhibited at the Glasgow School of Art Degree Show. which ran at the same time as the MFA show but is a different exhibition. Apologies for any confusion.
