FUELLING THE DEBATE
The rise in petrol prices. I know that 's all we have heard about recently but — come on! Have you seen the price of it? I work in a garage and all I get are complaints about the cost of it all day. I've also heard that it's due to rise to £1.50 a litre by the end of summer! It's a joke. What annoys me is the fact that, being a 19-year-old student trying to keep my car on the road, I find myself working so much I never see the light of day! We should get a student discount! The cost of running motors is unbelieveable when, in a country such as Africa — one of the world's poorest — fuel is sold for pennies a litre. This government needs to sort itself out. I can see major protests happening soon.

CYCLE OF DESPAIR
On the way into work this morning I cycled past the Tron on the High Street and noticed the fallout from what looked like some kind of traffic accident. I asked a passer-by what happened. and they told me a cyclist had been knocked off their bike. There was a cyclist killed just up the road by the Festival Theatre only a couple

I thought the film was okay although it wasn't as good as the previous Indiana Jones films.

LETTER OF THE FORTNIGHT GARDENS GO-SLOW
Can someone explain to me why Edinburgh City Council decided to redo the gardens in Nicolson Square? Even though most of the neighbours complained that they didn't want to lose the trees, the council decided that they were a 'danger to the public'. And also, when they finally did start, it took almost five months! It's not that big a garden!
I live in Nicolson Square and the amount of distruption and inconvenience this conversion has caused has been huge. They've been working on it since 21 st January and are still tinkering with it, the plan looks a little odd!
I'm sorry, I don't understand why the project has taken so long to complete. All they seem to be doing is moving soil around. The pavement was dug up months ago and left alone for the best part of three months and was only laid back down at the end of last week — just in time for the Hunter Square locals to take their places in Nicolson Square for the festival.
All I can say is: God help the Grassmarket residents.

(Paris, Berlin, London) there are a lot more cyclists everywhere. meaning motorists are more accustomed to them being on the road and drive accordingly. Two accidents on the same street in one month suggests something is very wrong. I know there are as many dangerous cyclists out there as

l cycle round Edinburgh a lot. as it's by far the quickest way to get round. but wonder how it compares to other cities in Europe for cycle safety and cycle numbers. The two are surely linked. no? Every time I go on holiday to other cities
Learning Support Assistant This was a great family film that we all enjoyed. I'm not so keen on all the creepy crawlies in the film but other than that I really enjoyed it.

there are dangerous motorists, and they give all cyclists a bad name. but it does seem that more could be done by Edinburgh Council to make cycling safer.
How both bikes and trams will fit onto the streets, I have no idea. I'd be interested to hear your readers views on this. Lyndsay Rankin Edinburgh
FINANCIAL HEART ATTACK AND VINE 80, Tom Waits is playing his only UK dates at the Playhouse in July. I was about to get my trigger finger ready like the rest of the UK for buying tickets online. but stopped at the last minute. Why? Because when the booking fee was added . tickets were over £100 each!
