Tom Dawson I've started reading my Christmas gift already. It's Ten Bad Dates with De Niro (Faber) which presents a wrtty and informed reappraisal of film histOry through its series of offbeat lists. These range from ‘Ten Films Somehow Related to the Paintings of Velazquez‘ to ‘Ten Wince-Making Instances of Finger/Toe Abuse'. Written With passron and flair by its knowledgeable contributors (including The List's film editor), it only lacks an index.
Miles Fielder Kim Deitch's Alias the Cat (Jonathan Cape) is a graphic novel about a New York City newspaper comic strip character and srlent movie serial hero who may also have been a Czech immigrant and masked crime-fighter. That stow-within-a-stow unfolds Within yet another narrative. this one based on Deitch and his Hallowe’en cat toy-collecting wife's efforts to discover the identity of another cat-man. named Waldo. It's mind-bending stuff that's crying out for David Lynch to make it into a move. Eddie Harrison This Christmas.
