JOHN SPACEY Karnival at Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, Sat 24 Nov

Having enjoyed increasing success as a DJ under his BeGoodMusic banner, house DJ John Spacey is making something of a comeback gig here. Spacey (real name John Brownlie) is originally from Edinburgh, and started playing out as a DJ when he went to university in Stirling a decade ago. Having worked the length of the country as a DJ and events organiser, however, it was a move to London in 2004 coupled to a decision to DJ full-time that saw his career take off. ‘We used to make pilgrimages through to Edinburgh every weekend,‘ Spacey recalls of his student days. ‘The scene was particularly good at the time, I don‘t know whether that was just because I was 19, but

clubs like The Vaults and nights like Colours were a real education for me. So I would have loved to move down to London and play music when I left uni at 21, but it just wasn't a feasible option at the time’.

Now, however, Spacey has worked his apprenticeship, and his particularly funky house sound along with a series of BeGood boat parties on the Thames is making inroads. ‘l've made a lot of links with good nights in London,‘ he says. ‘l've played Pascha and Subliminal Sessions in London, Glitterati at The Honey Club in Brighton, done some things with Ministry of Sound, and I’ve had a great three-year residency at The White House in Clapham. It's all about being pro-active, and when you give your full attention to something that you really love, it just grows legs.‘ (David Pollock)
