JUMPING THE SHARK Remember the episode of Happy Days where Fonzie had to jump over a shark on waterskis? The tragic effort to give a long-dead series one last moment in the sun gave birth to the term ‘Jump the Shark’. To mark the end of The Sopranos after 86 episodes we consider some TV shows that disappeared too soon and others that overstayed their welcome

GONE TOO SOON

I Fawlty Towers John Cleese and Connie

104 THE LIST 'S—Q.‘ 5-3; QL‘T

Booth finished only 12 episodes of arguably the greatest comedy show of all time. The dissolution of Cleese and Booth's marriage put paid to any more comedy gold.

I Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

Aaron West Wing Sorkin's study of the TV industry was cruelly cut by NBC after one series amid claims of poor ratings, despite receiving rave reviews and Emmy nominations. It was replaced on NBC by The Real Wedding Crashers. Sigh.

I This Life

There‘s a case to be made for

the debauched fun of six London lawyer types. which could have run and run, but lasted just two series. Last year's lacklustre special spoiled the party a bit but we never grew tired of Anna's ranting and Millie's moaning. I My So-Called Life

Low ratings - well, that and Claire Danes setting her sights on Hollywood cut this teen drama classic down in its prime. All 19 episodes remain unsung heroes of their genre.

STAYED TOO LONG I ER When the lead heart-throb

isn't the guy who replaced George Clooney but actually the guy who replaced the guy who replaced George Clooney. you can tell

something is well past its best.

I Last of the Summer Wlne

Two of them are dead and it '8 still going. but I guess Dregs

of the Summer Wine isn't quite so catchy.

I Only Pools and Horses They made their millions then lost it all again . . . ‘You plonker Rodney' . . . ad infinitum. 2222.

I The X-Flles

Do yOu recall the series where David Duchovny was ‘abducted' and disappeared for 11 episodes? Even he tried to give it up but they wouldn't let him leave until series nine. Producers claimed it could have run for another ten years but the CS/ franchise proves yOu can always have too much of a not bad thing.
