Driving strategic change within Scottish tourism to provide for sustainable growth of the sector. In order to compete, tourism in Scotland needs to be constantly renewed - visitors want to try new things, particularly when they are on a repeat trip. TIG tries to get the foundations right so that organisations have what they need

to innovate, and we tell them why and how to do it. We also try and encourage businesses to collaborate. either with other tourism businesses or related sectors such as retail or the arts.

Working with the 50 or so TIG members a creative and determined bunch of people running successful tourism-related organisations. who are prepared to give up their time for the good of developing the sector as a whole. It creates an informal and very positive work environment.

l was director of an arts. hospitality and tourism consultancy. handling a wide variety of projects throughout the UK. Management consultancy was great training for this job, as we were involved in many visitor facing operations the business model may differ between say,

hotels. visitor attractions, theatres and an ice rink but they all have to compete for the limited time and money of the same people. My first job in Scotland was at Gleneagles Hotels. which turned out to be the best career launch pad that anyone could have had.

Get to know people, earn their respect and keep in touch with them. Personal contacts are vital in a relatively small industry like tourism I'm still in touch with people from my Gleneagles days which was 20 years ago. And the good thing is that the receptionists and sales managers of that time are captains of industry now!

In tourism terms, Scotland's competitive edge is the unique combination of natural and built environment offered to visitors within a small countiy. Where else could you visit sites as historically significant as Stirling Castle. then enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Trossachs or Loch Lomond all in a morning? Combine this with the world-class activities available such as sailing on the West Coast and golfing at St Andrews plus some of the finest food and drink in the world - well. how can we go wrong? Finally we have a great opportunity to build on Scotland's developing reputation as a ‘green' destination.
