I THE ARCHES

253 Argyle Street, 0870 240 7528. [WC, WA] Arches Theatre Festival 2007 Thu 12—Sat 21 Apr. Times vary. Festival pass £25—£35 (day passes £10—£16). Annual, intemationally-reaching theatre festival, which, in previous years, has featured The Riot Group and Derevo alongside emergent local acts. This year, Poorboy, The T.E.A.M, NYC drag star Taylor Mac, Scottish actor Cora Bissett and Russian surrealists Akhe will all be present and correct.

Amada Tue lO—Sat 14 Apr. 7.30pm. £10 (£7). The directorial debut of Scottish singer, musician and actor Cora Bisset (Red Road), Amada is an adaptation of lsabel Allende’s short story about dignity in prostitution. Winner of the Arches Award for Stage Directors, and part of the Arches Theatre Festival.

Mother, Father, Son Tue lO—Sat 14 Apr. 9pm. £10 (£7). A new play investigating the Japanese phenomenon of hikikomori middle class men who live with their parents and shut themselves away in their bedrooms. Mother and Father cling to their routines, dance to their old records and don’t properly remember what their son looks like, until one day there are two severed fingers outside his door. Winner of the Arches Award for Stage Directors. Part of the Arches Theatre Festival.

The Belalst of Taylor Mac Thu l2—Sat 14 Apr. 10pm. £10 (£7). One of the stars of last year’s Edinburgh Festival returns to Scotland with more wry ukulele-strumming, witty socio—political observation, gargantuan wigs and beautifully sequinned shoes. Part of the Arches Theatre Festival.

Spanglebaby Thu 12—Sat 14 Apr. 7.30pm. £7 (£5). Award-winning site Specific theatre company Poorboy, of Learning the Rules of Chinese Whispers fame, move to an indoor venue with a new promenade piece devised for the Arches. Spanglebaby is set in Better Life (TM) - the online, virtual world where you can be everything you‘ve ever wanted to be. Part of the Arches Theatre Festival.

I CITIZENS’ THEATRE

Ice Cream Dreams Until Sat 31 Mar. 7.30pm (Sat mat 2.30pm). £9.50—£l6. A hard-hitting tale of drug misuse and family love set at the time of Glasgow’s ice cream wars from well-known Scottish writer and stage, film and TV actor Martin McCardie (Tinsel Town, Damaged Goods, Taggart & Don ’t Shoot The Goalie).

Fergus Lamont Tue 3—Sat 7 Apr. 7.30pm. £9.50—£16. Communicado offer up a new interpretation of Robin Jenkins’ novel, one of the most searching examinations of the modern Scottish psyche. Covering the years from the turn of the century to WWll, Fergus’ unforgettable voice recounts a tale of vanity, success and betrayal which shines its own sardonic light on Scotland and the cultural and political issues of the day.

The Chicago Project Thu 5—Sat 7 Apr. 7.30pm. £6 (£3). Steppenwolf Theatre’s Cross Town Ensemble and the Citizens’ Young Company team up once more as young Glaswegians perform new contemporary plays written by young Chicagoans in a mutual exchange of talent and ideas.

The Rocky Horror Tribute Show Sun 1 Apr. 7.30pm. £10. A special concert-Style version of Richard O’Brian’s cult musical with a full cast performing every song and some key scenes from the production.

New programme of dance from FireBox Dance Company, featuring highly- charged duet Urban Honey, set to an original sound score by Magic Daddy, and the premiere of new film Dark Matter.

Chicago the Musical Until Sat 7 Apr (not Sun). 7.30pm (Sat mat 2.30pm); Fri 5pm & 8.30pm. £1 l—£33.50. The sassy smash-hit show following the exploits of adulterous nightclub dancer Roxie Hart, who’d literally kill to be a star, sharp- suited, shoe-shuffling lawyer Billy Flynn and dancing jailbird Velma Kelly, arrives in Glasgow. Murder, greed, violence, corruption, exploitation, adultery, treachery . . . what more could you want in a musical?

The National Theatre of Scotland’s reincarnation of John Byme’s iconic Scottish masterpiece, which was once a highly popular. but short-lived, TV series, and follows the fun and frolics of 19603 pop band, The Majestics. £10. When Homer’s Ulysses got back from Ithaca 12 years late his wife was delighted to see him. Jules, the young actor who sets off to play him in a movie, is only gone for a year. But getting back to who and where he was is not so simple. A dark comedy by Irish playwright Sean Hardie.

As her family doctor investigates, a connection between her illness and the horrendous radio reports concerning persecution of Jews in Germany emerges. Rapture Theatre’s new production of Arthur Miller’s little- perforrned play showcases the playwright’s rare gifts for cutting-edge social commentary and old-fashioned humanity.

Hallway to Paradise: The Billy Fury Story Fri 30 Mar. 7.30pm. £12—£14. Did you know 605 pop icon Billy Fury sold more singles for Decca than The Rolling Stones? This rock’n’rolling musical charting his rise to fame features his original band, Fury’s Tomados, with Stars in their Eyes contestant Colin Gold taking the role of Fury himself.
