Review of the Year

Mark Robertson and the List music writers celebrate the gigs that mattered in 2006.

What makes a good gig great? It's a hugely divisive process compiling a list like this but one thing we kept coming back to was context. The bands here may have blown audiences away in the past perhaps, but for these shows all just seemed to display the right songs at the right time in the right place. This was the case whether they were on the rise. at their peak of their powers or, in the case of Sway who was so underground when he played the Liquid Room, no one came and he was still tremendous. Similarly, Secret Machines treated a modest Edinburgh crowd to an epic 90-minute set of head melting rock majesty at the Liquid Room.

For the most part, big appeared to be better. The sweaty. ten folk jostling down the front type of gig took a back seat this year as the notion of the gig as spectacle was perfected by a wheen of artists who decided to go large. Top of the bill were Flaming Lips’ (pictured) who held the balance between visual spectacle and musical vivacity at both their Usher Hall and SECC shows.

As far as successful returns to form go, Take That at SECC. The Strokes at T in the Park were worthy rebounds after some wilderness years while Radiohead's Meadowbank adventures, the eye-popping spectacle of Tool at SECC and The White Stripes' three-night residency at Carling Academy illustrated just how to give a show a real sense of occasion.

For sheer rock action, Mogwai at the Usher Hall. Acoustic Ladyland at Tut's and Sigur Ros at Corn Exchange all made the floors shake with their magic. Lest we forget the trippy delights of Phoenix at the Arches, Edan at the Bongo Club for sheer feel good exuberance. Of course there was poignancy too as Arab Strap bid a fond farewell, their final show at ABC being a bittersweet close to 2006.
