To mark the release of a new charity cookery book, The List’s very own Fanny Craddock, Allan Radcliffe, sampled the stars’ favourite recipes.

best-Rent musicians. Contributors include percussionist Evelyn Glennie. King (‘reosote and The List 's own columnist Roddy Woomhle. It features an introduction by Ian Rankin. who also contributes a recipe fora fried egg roll. All profits go towards the Special Needs Information Point at lidinhurgh‘s Royal Hospital for Sick Children.
The List had a sneak preview ofthe book's culinary delights by whipping up a three course meal and offering our verdict. in the spirit of Fanny.
LENTIL & VEGETABLE SOUP Contributed by Steven Polwart iKarine Polwart Band;
Ingredients 200g red lentils. 1 onion. 2 carrots. 2 potatoes. 1 leek. 2 chicken stock cubes. salt & pepper
Method Add the lentils. stock cubes. salt and pepper to one pint of boiling water. l eave to boil then chop the vegetables. l ob them ;nto the pan. add another pint of water. then leave to cook for 30 minutes. Nice'n'ez sy doe s it! Verdict A simple. full headed winter warmer. Thzs recipe for what our friends across the pond would refer to as garbage soup' is a good. flexrble baSis — optional ingredients can be mixed and matched according to your taste. Next!

into small love hearts. crushed garlic cloves. mange touts. courgettes.
carrots. spring onions. red pepper (Eddi
uses a handful of each vegetable). optional chopped red chilli, olive oil, fresh parsley. salt and pepper Method Slice the veg into strips. about a finger length and 1 mm wide. Heat 15ml oil in a pan. add the garlic and chilli then fry the veg. Place the pasta in a bowl and drizzle with oil. Add the veg and mix evenly into the pasta. Add the salt and pepper with the love heart mozzarellas and serve immediately. Verdict Cruncy. filling and perfectly economical. Adventurous kitchen
dabblers might consider adding the juice
and zest of a lemon for a bit of extra kick.

MOIRA MACAULAY’S SHORTBREAD
Contributed by Fred MacAulay (left) Ingredients (makes 20-24 pieces) 2259/802 butter (slightly salted). softened. flog/4oz caster sugar. 2259/802 plain flour. sifted. 1509/502 cornflour. sifted caster sugar for dredging Method Preheat the oven to lSOC/BOOF/GasQ. Cream the butter and sugar until pale. Add the flour and cornflour and blend. Tip into a buttered swiss roll tin and press down. Prick all over with a fork. then bake for 50-60 minutes until it's a uniform pale golden colour. Remove from the oven and dredge all over with sugar. then cut into squares. Leave for five minutes then decant onto a wire rack. Verdict A light. crumbly treat. the perfect guilty accompaniment to that mid-morning cup of coffee. Remember. everyone is entitled to a piece of really good cake at least once a year.
OVERALL VERDICT
While Gordon, Nigella et al certainly have nothing to fear,
C (mkitl ’ does offer pages of decent, wholesome, fare of the familiarly sturdy Scottish variety - starters and sarnies, soups and stews, puds, pastries and pies. And it’s for a good cause. Go on - as I always say, ‘it won’t stretch your purse’.
