Blondie, Texas and the Scissor Sisters. Yet. organisers of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Party have surpassed themselves with the headline acts for this year’s beano. which pairs pop icons the Pet Shop Boys with up and coming Paisley singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini.
Pet Shop Boys frontman Neil Tennant. currently celebrating the success of latest album Fundamental and new live LP Concrete is clearly looking forward to counting down to the New Year in the company of the band‘s Scottish fans with a greatest hits extravaganza. “It’s great to be invited to play the party of the year in Edinburgh and we are really looking forward to putting on a memorable show.’ he says.

The Concert in the Gardens. which is expected to attract in excess of [00.000 revellers. kicks off at 10pm on Hogmanay. and will feature three other stages in the arena. Artists performing on these stages and at the Ceilidh in the Gardens will be announced over the coming weeks. COMIC RECOVERING AFTER ATTACK
I We at The List are relieved to hear that popular stand-up and regular host at Edinburgh’s The Stand, Bruce Devlin, is making a speedy recovery following a brutal, unprovoked attack by a group of teenagers. Devlin, who has won countless admirers as compere of weekly show The Sunday Laugh-In and regularly makes appearances
at A Kick Up the Tabloids and gay friendly night Oot, underwent surgery on a shattered jaw. Police are examining CCTV footage of the crime scene and appealing for witnesses to the assault, which began on a 22 Lothian bus on Friday 20 October and ended with the comedian being kicked unconscious as he got off the bus at Henderson Street by four teenagers aged around 16. It is thought that Bruce will be well enough to return to hosting duties at The Stand on November 10 (see comedy listings). (AR)
Nick Barley appointed director of The Lighthouse Nick Barley. the editor of live List. has been appointed Director of The Lighthouse. Scotland’s National Centre for Architecture. Design and the City. Although adept at mum-tasking. even Nick is unable to take on these new responsibilities while continuing to edit the magazine. So sadly this means he will be leaving The List at the end of the year.
Nick has been editor of 7he List since 2003 and has kept it at the forefront of Scotland's cultural life while introducing a wide range of new developments including the launch of two new titles — file List Edinburgh Festiva/ Guide, published each July, and Map. the new quarterly contemporary art magazine. He also set up 7779 Us! Festival Writing Awards in association with the Writer’s Guild, invited in Irvine Welsh and other high profile guest editors, and produced a number of supplements and special issues including a campaigning edition for the Make Poverty History march in 2005. In the same year, Nick’s achievements were recognised by the award of Editor of the Year from PPA Scotland.
Looking ahead to his new role, Nick describes his job as being ‘to create an environment in which the Scottish public is more aware of the importance of good design to our lives. and in which more Scottish businesses place design at the heart of their activity.‘
