Name Todd Field
Born 24 February 1964
Background Born William Todd Field. he began acting after graduating from High School and moving to New York. Soon realising that acting meant a lot of lonely weeks out of work. he enrolled in film school. There he met Scott Ziehl who went on to direct Field (acting as star and producer) in the underrated ‘bad ambulance driver' drama Broken Vessels (1998). With a role then secured in Eyes Wide Shut Field was being touted as the next big thing. Instead anonymity beckoned. before he wrote and directed In The Bedroom. Released in 2001 it garnered several awards and Field decided to stay behind the camera — a tragic loss for the acting world but a great plus for adult intelligent US cinema.
What’s he up to now? Having directed an episode of cult TV series Carniva/e. Field is back behind the camera with a big- screen adaptation of Tom Perrotta's unnerving novel Little Children. It stars Kate Winslet as a frustrated writer and mother who embarks on an affair with a married man (Patrick Wilson).
What he says about suburbia ‘I’m not interested in suburbia. it‘s a 1950s notion. We’ve moved away from the Brady Bunch. Whether you grow up in the suburbs of Boston or in London. people aren't really that different. They have the same fears. wear similar clothes. we live in a very homogenised world and the gap between the lifestyles of those living is suburbia and the city no longer exists. The same fears apply wherever you live. it’s fear designed to buy into voting. conformity. we all live in a society that pedals fear at an alarming rate.’
Interesting Fact He is a keen photographer and loves purchasing second hand equipment. He wanted his daughter Alida. who appears in Little Children, to go to Edinburgh University. Alas. she opted to go to school in New York.

I Little Children is on selected release from Fri 3 Nov.
