Sherman‘s versions of the de—centered sell' has diminished somevvhat over the last tvventy years. but the images by younger. lesser-knovvn artists take their observations and theories into some very dark and extreme places (live Lauterlein and Daniel Lee. for example).
When the barrier hetvveen the sell’ and the other hreaks dovvn. the lace cracks and something abject and terrifying creeps out. The French hody artist ()rlan uses digital photographic morphing techniques and surgery to intentionally mess up an increasingly repulsive lace. lilsevvhere. the faces ol‘ children have been stretched. folded and caved-in to create vvarped ‘Angels’ and ‘l)emons‘ (in the vvork of John Stezaker. for example). You may close this catalogue of ahjects and put it hack on your coffee table. but those little heady eyes will keep on staring out at you.
