This fantastic nine-day festival and celebration of all things African includes performances
from, and exhibitions by African musicians and artists. It is however by the selection of films on offer that this inaugural event will either succeed or fail. There is happily no chance of the latter because this collection of movies, old and new, is to die for. The opener, Yeelen, a metaphysical tale of magic and sorcery by Malian director Souleymane Cissé is a classic by anyone’s measurement. Other delights include Ousmane Sembene’s Ceddo, ldrissa Ouedraogo’s Yaaba, Youssef Chahine’s seminal 1958 masterwork Cairo Station, Djibril Diop Mambety’s deliriously enjoyable 1973 film Touki Bouki (pictured) plus rare African shorts and documentaries.
