the more difficult and taxing features you will see this year, though arguably one of the most enlightening. The Empire in Africa draws on footage shot during Sierra Leone’s hideously violent civil war (1991-2002) - one of recent history’s most overlooked conflicts (and one of the UN’s biggest humanitarian failures), to paint a picture of a genocide that was all but ignored by the west. Narrated by musician Ritchie Havens with little regard to accusations of bias (the material here is way too graphic and emotive for this to be a real concern), this is one of the documentaries of the year. If you have the stomach for it this should not
be missed.
