lasgow's reputation as 'Scotland with Style” is
set to receive a l'urther boost with the news that
the internationally renowned seafood restaurant Rogano has been sold to the Scottish bar and restaurant chain Lynnet Leisure for more than £6 million. The group is expected to develop the art deco restaurant — which has attracted such celebrity diners as Tina Turner. Henry Kissinger. Bob Dylan and Madonna in its 7() year history — into a large new bar-restaurant and entertainment complex above and in the lanes around the property. thus contributing to the regeneration of the city's Royal lixchange Square. Lynnet Leisure operates a number of bars. restaurants and nightclubs across the country. including the private members‘ club. 2‘) Glasgow. also located in the square.
This re-development is one ol‘ around St) such projects currently changing the lace ot’ Scotland's largest city. These include the creation of a new sports arena and hotel complex next to the Sli(‘(‘. while building work was recently completed on the new David ('hipperticld- designed BBC Scotland complex at Pacific Quay. Stall will move into the new building in 2007.
Meanwhile. First Minister McConnell has revealed that the city"s liast lintl will play host to the athletes’ village il' (ilasgow‘s bid for the 20H (‘ommonwealth (iames is successful. Such a project will lead to a ti‘ansliirmation ot' the Dalmarnock area. with more than 1000 new homes being built in the village site. which will be made available for private sale and social housing in a bid to rejuvenate one of the city‘s most deprived areas.
NEW LOOK KELVINGROVE ATTRACTS RECORD CROWDS
I Scotland’s most popular visitor attraction, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, which reopened on 11 July following a three-year refurbishment, has attracted 575,864 visitors in its opening month. While Kelvingrove was already the most popular UK museum outside of London, this figure represents a 500% increase in visitor numbers compared to the last time the museum was open to the public, back in July 2002. Glasgow Provost Liz Cameron said, ‘These truly astounding visitor figures illustrate just how strong an attraction Kelvingrove is. These numbers vindicate the decision taken to close Kelvingrove and bring it into the 21st Century.’ It is expected that well over 1.5 million visitors will come to Kelvingrove this year.
