More and more these days in Scotland, the formerly disparate genres of traditional folk music and indie are combining in new and intriguing ways. And so it is with Foxface, the Glasgow-based trio formed around the songs of frontman and guitarist Michael Angus.
If that name seems vaguely familiar then perhaps it‘s because Angus was one of the founding members of underrated indie outfit Peeps Into Fairyland, currently on indefinite hiatus (ie split up) after several years wowing audiences on Scotland‘s underground circuit.
Foxface carry on where Peeps lnto Fairyland left off, although there is more of a traditional folky influence to proceedings. Having started as a solo venture, Foxface is now a fully-fledged band, with John Ferguson (drums, accordion, banjo, violin) and Jenny Bell (bass, vocals) joining Angus on stage for shows which shift from acoustic melancholia to Pogues-esque revelry in the wheeze of an accordion. The band‘s debut double A-side single, ‘Monster Seas‘/‘Across to Texa‘, released on their own label, is the proof, the former being a rampaging rattle worthy of Sons & Daughters, the latter sounding like Bonny Prince Billy if he were part of the Fence Collective, and if he cheered up a bit.
Foxface remain unsigned, a state of affairs which surely can't continue much longer. The band have just returned from a hugely successful stint at the Skye Festival, and are heading out as support to Roddy Woomble. Angus having co-written two songs on Woomble‘s recent solo album. And a folking good time will no doubt be had by all. (Doug Johnstone)
