When little Melissa Panarello published 100 Strokes of the Brush Before Bed last year, Europe was scandalized. Only the likes of Ana'i's Nin and Catherine Millet had written so explicitly, so personally, about the nitty and gritty of sex. But the main point of concern was that the author was still in her teens and using source material from her own diaries as inspiration. The bit where she uses the dildo on the older guy particularly brought a tear to many a reader‘s eye. But imagine the stink back in the old-fashioned part of Sicily where she was born and bred and where women are expected to be virgins on their wedding day. Little wonder

The depressing, if predictable thing, is that the fuss is largely undeserved. Any sense of being titillated surely disappears under a torrent of giggles induced by some of her writing. In the credits, she thanks Thomas ‘who knows how to sniff my skirt‘ while I have no idea what’s going on when she purrs ‘what death do my ghosts think I have died?‘ Where 100 Strokes was a paean to self-discovery, this narrator appears to have found her ideal bloke. But when an old flame appears back on the scene her jealousy threatens to destroy all their best laid plans. With such an iconic beginning to a career, it‘s hard to see where she can possibly go from here. But I have a fair idea where her readers will eventually be heading. (Brian
