Mibsu‘MMen MUSIC JOHN ARMITAGE MEMORIAL St Cuthbcrt's Church, Edinburgh. Sat 11) Jul

In Edinburgh, JAM is usually something to do With getting severely stuck in traffic. But the music organisation that goes under the same name is very definitely and firmly movnig forward. In exrstence for six years. JAM John Armitage Memorial is based in London and, for the third consecutive year, visits Edinburgh With an impressive array of new music According to Edward Armitage. chairman of the trust that oversees JAM's work, ‘lt's all based on the original idea of my father's to give young composers a voice. Now we also have the added bonus of two big commissions each year from more established composers.‘ Young and emerging composers are invited to submit work for any combination of choir, brass quintet and organ, three or four of which are selected for

performance. Over 70 entries were

received this time round from

composers with a wide range of different backgrounds 'From a little old lady in a church choir to a 13 year-old boy. who damn nearly got in.' says Armitage. ‘That‘s what's joyous ~ anybody can submit and we do get

everything.‘

In the main, work selected is from composers who are at least partly on a set path. Those who will be heard in Edinburgh are Graham Lynch, Mick Foster and Jonathan Pitkin, who grew up in the city. All three have chosen to write for unaccompanied choir. although the specral commissions use the full JAM forces of Onyx Brass, Organ. vocal soloists and the Chapel Choir of Cambridge's Selwyn College. Commissrons are by Judith Bingham and Paul Patterson, who both lend their own full-hearted enthusiasm to the scheme. 'JAM's support for young composers is inspirational‘ says Bingham. 'They are creating a brilliant new repertoire of work for chorus, brass and organ. It really is very exCiting and heartening

to be involved.‘ (Carol Main)
