Largely centred around the wistful songwriting skills of Brian Barclay. who delivers a number of wrstful tracks in the shape of ‘Forever' and ‘Photograph', the four piece collaborators throw in different styles which give the album a variety of sounds. that include rock passages. mournful acoustic sections and Serllng samples. It doesn't always gel, but as on ‘The Fear That Binds' With its soul harmonies or the collaboration With rising Glasgow rapper Hydro. on “Dreams of You‘, it can make for interesting listening. Pulsing With dreamy summertime narcolepsy and Simple keyboard patterns. this second album from Lanarkshire duo Ives (Brian Leslie and lain Foxwell) sits halfway between the dancefloor and the daytime. While songs like 'Skull and Bones' and ‘The Holographic' feature a harder, more techno-oriented progression, the lush. eftiCiently blessed-out expanses of the title track and ‘This Is Not Yet Your Life‘ offer a more compelling, relaxed SOund. They obwously have one foot in the old school ~ and everything by Orbital and The Orb in their record collections — but

The fecundity of Edinburgh's avant-nOise scene is as startling as it is incestuous. A recent highlight was the live debut of Hockyfrilla. the female duo of CK Dexter Haven and Dora Doll. who. as part of Decaer Pinga. supported Sonic Youth at the Barrowland. Recorded prior to their recent outing, this. Hockyfrllla's first CDR release, is an ear- splitting chug of high frequency assaults, as if industrial era Cabaret Voltaire had been formed by anarchic inmates of St Trinian's sCience lab instead of serious young men in leather kecks.
But don't be fooled by the apparent blue stocking jolliness of the name. It's Swedish for 'mullet.‘ And was that really a “Who-ah. who- ah!‘ KLF sample on track two? Given Hockyfrilla‘s less melodious propensities for total destruction. probably not.
CK Dexter Haven shows up again on War In Miniature. (edit)' a 3" CDR by USurper vs CK Dexter Haven. Recorded live at Stereo in Glasgow in 2003. this third part of Lapsed Electronics' ‘Wage Slave' triptych comes neatly wrapped in a buff brown pay packet. For 20 minutes. its disabled array of pops. pings. shivers and shakes come on as if a little army of fleas were making buSy With a big bag of kitchen utensils to repel all interlopers as they abseil round the skirting board.
