GOLDEN BALLS With the World Cup upon us, Robin Lee wonders, where are all the gay role models?
I have a confession to make. I like football. Not just the thighs, the haircuts, the bitchy wives and the nouveau glam-trash lifestyle, but the actual game itself. The business of kicking a ball into a big net. Sometimes I ponder the merits of 4-4-2 versus 3-5-2 while in the shower. I can discuss who should play ‘in the hole’ without collapsing into giggles. I agonise over what transfers to make in my fantasy football team. I guess
I’m a footy geek.
Earlier this year, the tabloids licked their lips over the possibility of gay footballers. Why did defender Sol Campbell walk out of an Arsenal game? Was it trouble with his girlfriends? Or something to do with his brother’s being jailed for assaulting a classmate who called Sol gay? Who were those two star players and a musician discovered pleasuring each other with mobile phones? The speculation was so fervid that, despite not being named, England left-back Ashley Cole - engaged to Girls Aloud stunna Cheryl Tweedy - decided to sue the News of the World for libel.
Commentators gliny assert that ‘by the law of averages', 10% of top footballers must be gay. But these sportsmen are hardly average. A select few are gifted with prodigious talent, while the rest slog their way to the top through hard work and practice. It’s a male-dominated, macho sphere, so why shouldn’t it be confidence-destroying for a budding homo ball-kicker? Justin Fashanu, the only high-profile player to have come out, ended up hanging himself in 1998 following allegations of child abuse.
In 11 Men Out (pictured), appearing in Scotland as part of the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival on Tour, Ottar, an Icelandic star on the pitch, comes out as gay. ln what’s billed as a comedy, he’s forced to leave the big club he plays for and join an amateur club, which soon becomes all-gay. It’s unsubtle; the clichés fly faster than a Steven Gerrard shot, the football action is minimal, and none of the characters are likeable. There’s plenty of nudity, however, but where's the authentic story? Where are the
real gay footballers?
