I As unbelievable as it sounds, Austrian filmmaker Michael Hidden Haneke (pictured) has announced that he is remaking his critically acclaimed 1997 thriller Funny Games in the English language. The film, about a middle class family who arrive at their secluded holiday home only to be terrorised by a bunch of young men, is slated for release in 2008, and Naomi Watts (King Kong) is in negotiations for one of the roles. The film will be co-produced by Tartan Films. Could this be Haneke’s big American breakthrough or the first nail is his coffin? Watch this space.

Producer and born again agit prop documentary filmmaker Robert Greenwald’s new film takes a long hard look at the international social and economic impact of the US retail giant. Having set a template with his energetic and combative tirades against Rupert Murdoch (Outfoxed) and George W Bush (Uncovered), this feels very much like business as usual. Greenwald’s low budget community TV filmic style is somewhere between guileless and unpretentious, but if you are spearing embroidered elephants you don’t necessarily need the sharpest of sticks.
Wal-Mart is heavily researched and based largely on the heartbreaking testimonials of ex employees. Eschewing narration, Greenwald uses a simple array of documentary techniques to well and truly condemn the Walton Family who own the chain. It’s a frightening lesson in what happens when monopolies go bad, and one we would all do well to bear witness to. (Paul Dale)

A POLITICIAN'S VIEW
As part of an occasional new series The List asks a member of the Scottish Parliament to critique a new film release. First up Sarah Boyack MSP looks at Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price.
The big supermarkets and their practices may be at the top of the agenda right now for the Environment Committee of the Scottish Parliament, which I chair, but this film will probably be an eye opener to most people who don’t normally give such matters a second thought when getting their weekly shopping.
First and foremost this film challenges us to think more deeply about shopping for food, how food is produced, and the way the people involved in this process are treated.
It would be fair to say that some of the issues raised are not as relevant to Britain. The minimum wage here is far higher than it is in America and the same levels of poverty pay of shop workers are not so prevalent.
But fears of big supermarkets pushing out small shops, failing to source local produce, treatment of suppliers and local planning issues are very relevant to Scotland today.
In my constituency of Edinburgh Central, we are lucky. The excellent farmers‘ market, good local co-ops, the increasing availability of fair trade products, ethical sourcing from places like M&S and the arrival of Waitrose give choice and offer sustainable shopping. However, most of Scotland does not have this choice, and only by consumer pressure can we save local independent shops and farmers markets and make the big supermarkets act in a socially responsible way. Go and see this film - it’s on at the Cameo which is worth supporting in itself — and start asking questions when you next go for your groceries.
