Around Town
Name Jane Smith Occupation Milliner to the stars How did you start as a milliner? I had done sculpture at art school and was working iii a costumier‘s in Drury Lane. l was down irt tlte stockroom counting the boots. when I was asked by the BBC to make a tiny Tudor hat for the Canadian actress Genevieve Bujold. for Anne of a Thousand Days. It was very successful and they asked me to make another and then another and that's how I got started. A couple of years later I met Laura Ashley. and she asked me to make her some Edwardian sailor hats for a photo sltoot and then she started selling them in her shops. I supplied her with hats for the next 14 years. making every one by hand. Who have you made hats for? I have ntade lots of hats for Sarah Ferguson before she got married and I made one for Annie Lennox, for her wedding. I mostly make hats for filrrts and theatre now. I made the hats for the wedding of Jesus in The Da Vincl Code. and for a production of Guys and Dolls. I was asked to make up the hats from the cover of Sergeant Pepper '3 Lonely Hearts Club Band for Paul McCartney during LiveB. Recently. I made a mayoral hat for the real Sheriff of Nottingham! Why did you get involved with Hatvvalk? The organisers came to one of my summer schools and invited me up. Everyone will be presenting their collections and then I come in with more theatrical hats. My theme this year is Phantom of the Opera crossed with Dynasty! I'll be making some huge and scary. brightly-coloured and over the top cavalier hats, but with good shapes. It 's a great oppOrtunity for young milliners to show off the quality of their design and to show what they are able to do.
Do you have to be mad to be a hatter? Not at all! I'm sane Jane!
