Meccas. World-renowned fashion label (‘omme des (iarcons is to open one of its ‘guerrilla‘ stores on the site of the old wedding car garage in Yorkhill's liastvale l’lace. 'l‘urner l’ri/e nominee Jim Lambie has been commissioned to produce an art work which will form the centrepiece of the store. True to his trademark flamboyant style. Lambie has decorated the exterior of an original wedding limousine. which sits triumphantly among the clothing ranges. (‘omme des (iarcons. originally established by Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo. is the foremost proponent of so- called ‘guerrilla retailing‘. which involves setting up temporary. ad-hoc shops in neglected locations. The label first adopted the tactic in Berlin in 2004 in order to bring its unique clothing designs and perfumes and accessories ranges to some 20 cities that are deemed to be off the
established haute couture radar. The Helsinki venue. for instance. was constructed from a 1950s pharmacy. while ill Warsaw. the pillars of a bridge formed the backdrop to a bustling temporary store. Conventional fashion mores. such as the ever-changing seasons are gleefully ignored. Meanwhile. venues adhere to a strict rule of remaining open for a maximum of twelve months. operating as a not- for profit company. with all profits being ploughed into creative studios. to operate alongside the store. and the development of a public an and multi-media library.
In keeping with the label‘s commitment to rellecting the surroundings and culture of each of its chosen locations. the Glasgow venue‘s studio warehouse. operating through Clydeside‘s Initiative for the Afls. will provide affordable. accessible rehearsal space. recording studios. a pre- production stage and two galleries for local visual and performance artists. (‘reative seminars will also be set tip for the benefit of local communities.

YOUNG DESIGNERS MAKE THE SHIFT
FROM CATWALK TO HIGH STREET
I The clothes are barely back on their hangers following the inaugural Edinburgh International Fashion Festival, but two of the young designers featured in the festival’s New Edinburgh showcase have already been approached by a major High Street chain. The pair of young talents, Jenny Williamson (pictured), a graduate of Edinburgh’s College of Art, and Chloe Patience are being courted by the - as yet, unnamed - retailer, with a view to either joining their design studio team on a salaried basis or creating one-off capsule collections. Another of the featured designers, Elliot Atkinson, also an ECO alumnus, has received a raft of private commissions, as well as his first wholesale order from cutting-edge London boutique, The Pineal Eye. Clearly, a week is a long time in fashion. (AR)
