l l, llVlSlON DRAMA THE LINE OF BEAUTY BBC Two, Wed 17 May. 9pm 00
Nick Guest uproots from a comprehensive school in Northamptonshire market town Barwick to Worcester College, Oxford. Here, he mixes with landed gentry and the upper classes. After graduating with a first. he lodges at the Notting Hill townhouse of his college friend and unrequited love object Toby while starting a PhD in English. By coincidence, Toby’s father, Gerald Fedden, is the new Conservative MP for Barwick.
It’s 1983, and the Thatcher era has reinforced itself by means of a second election win. Nick, 21, is setting forth on an era of his own, exploring his homosexuality and calculating what shape the relics of carefree university friendships and frissons assume now. He answers a private ad placed by a black man in his late 205, and starts an awkward, but sweet relationship with Leo, consummated in garden and on heath.
Adapted from Alan Hollinghurst’s Booker Prize-winning book of the same name, this is the first of three episodes, the second set in 1986, and the third after the Tory landslide of 1987. Sadly, the visuals are unconvincing and the dialogue shoddy: apart from a few period motors, there is little to show the changing times of the 805, no sense of an old order tasting fresh ideas of social mobility and meritocracy.
Particularly telling is a reference to the book's title, which ambiguously refers to cocaine, while pointing up Nick’s fixation with aesthetics. When he first speaks to Wadi Ouradi (at Toby’s 21st birthday party, held at his ennobled uncle’s opulent, classical country home), whose influence he comes under in the second episode, Wadi tosses away the clunky, ‘l’ve got some charlie, if you need cheering up.’ It’s not the only line that falls short
of beauty. (Robin Lee)
