CASE STUDY: THE VOLUNTEER

Katherine Puttick, 27, comes from Fraserburgh. She studied marine and environmental biology at St Andrews University, then took a masters degree at Sheffield Hallam University. She began volunteering for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) during her third

year at St Andrews and now works full-time as an assistant warden at the RSPB reserve at Loch of Kinnordy in Angus.

'I knew I had to get some practical experience it I was to get a job in conservation. The theory is all very well, but yoxi‘ve got to know how to put it into practice. So I went to my local RSPB resen/e at Loch of Strathbeg and they were only too happy to have me volunteer.

'l did a lot of different things. from bird surveys to repairing fenCing. And they gave me lots of information about habitat management and that kind of thing. It also helped make me more confident in speaking to people. At univerSity I hated giVing presentations, but since starting With the RSPB I've got really good at

them. and I really enjoy that now. As long as you're really interested you can harp on about it as much as yoo like.

‘Another thing that helped With my career was gomg to regional team meetings. That helped me meet peOple Within the RSPB and learn abOut other reserves. When this Job came up it was a natural progreSSion. They knew what they were getting, baSically and i knew what I was letting myself in for.

'l still sometimes volunteer for other bird surveys. OutWith my (Ob. It has been a really good thing for me because I've met so many new peOple and gained so many skills.

‘And if anyone's intersted. there's always loads of volunteer opponunities on the RSPB websne. We'd be lost Without them!‘
